Dr Rosen Arsov, specialist trichologist, clinical laboratory, member of RHRS (Russian Hair Research Society) and ITA (International Trichoscopy Association)
In 2014 he created and became the Medical Director of Bulgaria's first specialised medical practice in trichology.
"I believe that patients with hair problems deserve special attitude and attention, just like in any other disease. Hair science inspires me because it provides a radically different, holistic approach to medicine. Using trichology's alphabet I identify different signs that show me which particular markers to check up for understanding the organism's general condition. This fascilitates the process of diagnosis and therapy, and helps achieving the desired lasting result with my patients. For me trichology is a science that unifies other fields of human knowledge. As a specialist with trichological, dermatological and clinical experience I can cooperate with endocrinologists, gynaecologists, andrologists, rheumathologists. This approach leads to success. I am happy to feel the trust, to see the smile of each satisfied patient with healthy skin and hair!"
What is trichology?
The world trichology comes from the Greek τριχο, which means hair. Trichology is a medical field that specialises narrowly to treat diseases of the skin of the head, hair follicles and hair length.
Trichologists are doctors who treat hair and scalp, treat hair loss, different types of hair thinning, hair damage, anomalies and head skin diseases.
When a trichological examination is needed?
When you lose that 80-100 hairs in 24 hours.
When you feel that recently your hair has thinned.
When your scalp becomes visible through the hair.
When hairs appear or increase on your face, under the nose, chin, the sideburns.
When your hair is harder to comb, has become lighter and more "airy" than before.
When you need to wash your hair more often than usual.
When you have dandruff, there is itching and on the scalp appear itching scabs.
How is hair examined?
Trichoscopy is computer diagnostics of hair and scalp with a micro camera with a special integrated system that provides quantity and quality information on the condition of the scalp and the hair follicles.
The resulting trichogramme reflects the hair density in 1 square centimetre, hairs' thickness, the percent of dysplastic hair and the proportion of hairs in anagen and telogen phase. This is the most advanced and precise method for diagnosis of hair loss, androgenetic alopecia and diffuse hair thinning. With the help of trichological technology, signs specific for the particular condition can be observed, which helps the correct diagnosis. Trichoscopy provides reliable, measurable data for follow-up of the achieved results during and after the end of the treatment.

Which conditions are the basis of hair loss and what groups of people are the most affected?
Diseases of the hair and the scalp are congenital and acquired. The most common genetically predisposed ones is men and women type of hair loss, which is the current division of what was known in the past as androgenetic alopecia. Internal diseases associated with a trichological problem are many: hormonal imbalance, scalp inflammation, degenerative changes, thyroid gland changes, autoimmune diseases, diabetes and others. Psychological stress often causes hair loss. The problem becomes graver when hairs do not regrow or grow with changed thickness.
In the seven years of professional trichological practice, patients with hair loss came predominantly from the following professions:
• IT specialists;
What principles do you follow in diagnosis and treatment of your patients?
Here we should underline that self-treatment is pointless and in most cases even harmful. It is crucial to identify the reason of the problem and to stabilise the organism's internal condition. A detailed anamnesis is made and when needed blood tests are prescribed. Hair loss can be caused by the activity of the ovaries and the thyroid gland, by hormonal imbalance, deficiencies and others.
We perform a detailed physical examination, followed by imaging of the current condition with trichoscopic technology. There is an alphabet of trichology that describes the changes in skin and hair. "Reading" leads to the diagnosis. The best treatment is the one that can affect the cause of the problem. A complex approach is needed. This means internal and external treatment, specific for the particular patient, control and follow up. When hair loss and thinning are concerned it is important to know that every person is unique. Individual approach, right diagnosis and treatment methodology are the way towards achieving lasting results and beautiful, healthy hair!
