WHERE IN BULGARIA ARE YOU?
A major battle between the Russian Imperial Army, backed up by Bulgarian volunteers, and Ottoman forces was fought around that mountain peak in August 1877, predetermining the end of the war as a result of which Bulgaria gained its independence.
Since the 1930s a huge monument of stone has stood there to remind the generations of the valour of the 19th century freedom fighters. It is one of Bulgaria's most heavily charged historical sites, and prime ministers and presidents, including Putin, have been brought over on state visits.
Hint: The Bulgarian name of the peak translates as "Dog Rose."
