Going back to the early 70ies, when neither TV nor Internet were at hand, my short-wave catches of BBC radio served as a second University degree: from language - to politics - to sports - to culture... 15 yrs. later, when I met TIM SEBASTIAN in D.C.,promoting his book I SPY IN RUSSIA, he was amazed of my profound knowledge of world news while living 40 yrs. behind the curtain... "KEEP THE ASPIDISTRA FLYING!" Bozhidar Dimitrov, MD Director, Institute of Psychology Bulgarian Academy of Sciences

I remember very well the year 2002 when BBC decided to scrap its Bulgarian section and discontinue BBC translation to Bulgaria. It cited financial and political reasons. The main reason was that BBC directed its resources to Arabic broadcasts for the Middle East. Bulgaria was no longer interesting for British politics. As a long-standing listener to BBC, I felt betrayed. The ball is in BBC's back garden and to blame Bulgaria for banning BBC is preposterous.

I wonder which are "the few "capital cities in Europe where The BBC WS is not available on FM ! Apart from Moscow of which we have had enough in the recent past.Even than the broadcast was in Bulgarian, not in Russian for less than an hour a day. Living in the countryside I am not one of the signatories though I was a regular BBC WS listener in English for the past 40+ years as source of valuable information and entertainment otherwise censured in this country at the time. The world has changed and with the high-tech and electronic gadgets there is no genuin need to have foreign language broadcasts even in Sofia which is not so cosmopolitan city in a sovereign country. I have no idea if Radio France Internacional or Deutsche Velle is on FM in Sofia, even r Moscow in Russian-God Forbid !. May be next time The Vagabond will try to promote radio Ankara to have FM services in Sofia and other cities ?
