Iva Stoyanova, manager and founder, on the creative and business potential of teaching music to people of all ages
It is never too early or too late to discover your passion in music and immerse in it – with Melody Music School. The innovative school is dedicated to helping both children and adults to develop their talents in singing and playing the piano, guitar, drums. Melody Music School opened less than two years ago but is already popular with students of all ages who seek professional lessons in music in order to boost their education or career, or just for fun. The school is also an excellent idea for anyone who wants to invest in a business model with immense potential for further growth. Iva Stoyanova, manager and one of the founders of Melody Music School, shares more.
Why is Melody Music School a good idea?
As a relatively new school we are trying to establish an innovative approach in teaching music. We are aware that music lessons at school are not as interesting as they can be and do not inspire children. Our business is targeted to fill this gap. We want to inspire young people and adults who want to learn singing or an instrument for whatever reason – as a future profession, as a hobby, or because they want to compete in music TV formats.
Each of our students enjoys a personal approach that fits their specific goals. We do not have a fixed curriculum. We teach what the student wants and needs to know and what the teacher thinks will be best for them.
Do Bulgarian children need a place such as Melody Music School?
Yes, absolutely. Each member of our team, not only the teachers, but also the people in the administration and I personally, have musical background and we all believe that music makes children more different and better adults.
There is a lot of data and research that show that music helps children to be more concentrated and organised, more curious. Music makes you see the world with new eyes and can help you throughout your life, even if you do not turn it into a profession. Music builds individuals, people who are more different, positive, romantic.
What are the other benefits for children from Melody Music School?
Children always benefit when they learn something new outside of the school curriculum. This helps their personal growth and can be as helpful as mastering another foreign language.
Take singing, for example. If you have taken singing lessons as a child and teenager, you will have a more controlled and effective voice as an adult. This is a crucial skill for a businessperson when presenting an idea or negotiating a deal.
The very process of learning to play an instrument teaches that with hard work and perseverance you can achieve all your goals. Besides, it gives you the confidence that you can do what few others can.
What age are the students at Melody Music School?
We start working with children as early as 3-5 years of age in our special Early Music Development classes. After the age of 5, children can attend individual lessons in singing, piano, guitar or drums. After this, the sky is the limit. We have students aged 60-70. They have dreamed all of their lives to learn how to sing or play an instrument and we give them the opportunity to finally realise this dream.
Often, students tell us that Melody Music School and our teachers have helped them to feel better, different, more alive. I think this is one of our greatest achievements.
Is there more potential for Melody Music School on the Bulgarian market?
Definitely. Schools like ours are few, as people still think that maths, sports and foreign language education are more important for their children. But in reality, Bulgaria lags behind other European countries in this respect. There, music education is deemed as equally important as everything else.
Children and adults, however, are already interested in music, partially due to the popularity of music TV formats. Singing or playing an instrument is also considered cool among teenagers. So, the market is huge and is here.
What have you achieved since opening Melody Music School?
We went through both good and bad times. We had to establish ourselves on the market. We started with 4 teachers – each for our main fields. Today they are 8, and each day of the week we have someone who teaches the guitar, drum, piano or singing. Our administrative team is growing, too, helped by me and Iliyan Stanoyev, who is the owner and founder of Melody Music School.
For me, our biggest success is that we have created a great team of ambitious young people. Many of them are students at the State Music Academy, who are interested not only in their careers, but also in helping others find their passion.
We have already organised 4 concerts for our students. The latest was a big step for us, as each of our students performed live. Their talent was truly impressive.
We also started open lessons.
Our team is growing, and so is the number of our students. I hope that we will be able to open a new branch in Sofia by the end of the year, with more teachers and staff.
What other goals do you set for the future of Melody Music School?
My greatest dream is to attract investors who recognise our business's incredible potential.
We are also planning to become the first licensed private music school in Sofia and to create a new programme for music education that combines individual and group lessons, concerts, open and master classes. We are working on developing our own app for parents where they can follow their children's progress and control the education and payment process.
I would also like to help more people of all ages to discover and explore their passion for music, and to make music education more affordable to everyone.
