Architect Siyana Georgieva, co-founder, on ideal clients and creating interiors for them
The interior projects of Bonbon Studio are hard to pigeonhole stylistically, yet when you see one of them you instantly recognise the creative minds behind it. The Varna-based studio specialises in bold concepts that fit to perfection both the space and the inhabitants. Its team has over 10 years of international experience and has crafted to perfection the ability to take care of all stages of the process: from the concept to giving you the keys to the finished interior of your dreams. Architect Siyana Georgieva, co-founder, shares more.
Can you describe the style of Bonbon Studio in three sentences?
Truth to be told, we, as a studio, have difficulties defining our style ourselves because we venerate and like the interior in all of its diversity. Each time period has its charm and key elements and we love to combine these wherever we can. When we put things in this way, we should describe our style as eclectic. However, if our clients have the say, they would use words such as "colourful, different and capable of creating cosiness." This is what we hear most often from them.
You say that you seek clients ready for bold and original design solutions. Is there such a thing as "ideal client" in Bonbon Studio's philosophy and if yes, what do they look like?
The ideal clients, first and foremost, have done their homework and have chosen us because they have liked what we do. They are ideal for us because they see themselves reflected in our work and they trust us that we are going to provide a good project. The ideal client is also capable of working together with us and listening to our advice and ideas, because they realise that this is why they have hired professionals. Our most successful projects are the ones in which the client has trusted us completely and has let us take care of the realisation as well. This is when the whole project becomes really completed. Our clients are even welcomed in their new home with wine and chocolates in the fridge.
Signature interior and architectural solutions on the one hand and the tastes and preferences of the client on the other: is it hard to achieve accord on what the final project will look like?
In our practice before starting a project, we discuss in great detail what the client likes and imagines as a style, feeling, colours, functions and other important elements. In my opinion, it is good when we, designers, have confidence, character and lots of creative ideas, but the ability to sense what the person in front of us wants is also important. First and foremost, we should be able to listen to them. After we have a starting point from which to begin planning and designing, it is our job to combine the client's desire with the creative element that we want to put into the particular interior. Mutual understanding is crucial for this. Usually, we give longer deadlines for design because we present the concept as a whole. This has proven as a good practice because it allows the client to see the whole picture and to understand and value the project.
Our job as interior designers is not to impose our opinion, but to take the client's desires and process them in a way that makes them visually and functionally pleasing.
Which Bonbon Studio project will stay with you forever?
The first one, in which a beautiful family trusted us to realise everything from the idea to the realisation. It was a large apartment in the heart of Varna. The clients just gave us the keys and one year to finish everything. They liked and approved our project and fully trusted us to realise all with our teams – finishing works, furniture and everything needed.
We designed every single piece of furniture for the apartment and took care that everything went according to plan, without any changes in the design. This project attracted a lot of attention and became the most liked project in an online interior design magazine. We did not even suspect that it was published there.
Six years later, I realise that we got lucky with these clients as everything went smoothly while we, in reality, were rather inexperienced. This is why I am extremely thankful for these people's trust.
