GROWING STRONG, CONFIDENT AND CURIOUS: WHY MOVEMENT MATTERS FROM THE VERY START

For children, movement is much more than running, jumping and climbing

It is one of the ways they discover the world, learn what their bodies can do and develop the confidence to try something new. And when movement is combined with music, play and a nurturing environment, it can become a powerful part of early child development.

This is the philosophy behind The Little Gym, a globally recognised early child development programme that combines gymnastics, music and fun for children from 4 months to 12 years old. Celebrating its 50th anniversary this year, The Little Gym continues to inspire generations of children around the world. In Sofia, families can choose from two convenient locations – 90, Tsarigradsko Shose Blvd., and 118, Bulgaria Blvd.

Learning through movement

Young children learn best when they are actively involved. A climbing challenge becomes an opportunity to solve a problem. Balancing on the beam develops concentration as well as coordination. Crawling, rolling and swinging help children understand how their bodies move through space.

At The Little Gym, these experiences are part of what the programme calls 3-dimensional learning – an approach designed to support children’s physical, cognitive and social development simultaneously.

The aim isn’t to create little competitive athletes. Instead, children are encouraged to explore, practice and discover their own abilities at their own pace. And perhaps most importantly, they are having fun while doing it.

From babies taking their first steps...

Development begins long before a child can perform a gymnastics routine. For babies and toddlers, classes provide opportunities to explore movement, strengthen coordination and build body awareness. Parents are actively involved in the classes for the youngest, turning movement into a shared experience filled with play, smiles and discovery.

As children grow, so does the challenge. They can learn to balance, jump, roll, climb and move with greater independence – gradually discovering that something that seemed difficult yesterday might be possible today.

...to confident kids ready for the world

For (pre-)school-age children, gymnastics is not simply about physical fitness. Learning a new movement requires concentration, persistence and the willingness to try again after an unsuccessful attempt.

A child who learns to approach a new physical challenge with curiosity rather than fear is also practising confidence. A child who waits for their turn and encourages a classmate is developing social skills. And a child who keeps practising until they succeed is learning the value of persistence.

The Little Gym's classes are designed around these principles, creating a safe and nurturing environment where children are encouraged to give their best and build confidence.

A place to move, play and make friends

The social side is just as important. Weekly classes give children the opportunity to interact with others in a structured but playful environment, while parents can become part of a community of families with children at similar stages of development.

With bi-lingual instructors, flexible schedules and classes for children from 4 months through 12 years, The Little Gym offers an experience that can grow alongside a family for many years.
