ATELIER M+: DEFINING TOP-CLASS INTERIORS IN BULGARIA AND LUXEMBOURG
Architects Kamelia Metodieva and Bilyana Belcheva on the importance of quality and detail
Atelier M+ is a Luxembourg and Sofia based architecture studio led by two architects, Kamelia Metodieva and Bilyana Belcheva. Together, they work to reveal the limitless potential of design and create buildings and interiors that have lasting positive impact on people's lives and the environment.
The team shares more.
What are your impressions from working in Sofia and Luxembourg? Are there differences in the requirements and tastes of clients in Bulgaria and abroad?
Generally speaking, the clients in Luxembourg are for sure more aware of the benefits of having an expert for planning, of using high quality, sustainable materials and are definitely used to an overall neat, modern and minimalistic environment. They would easily renovate a house in as much natural materials as possible – from the thermal insulation being wooden fiber to the wooden profiles of the windows, as well as the interior materials and with all of that meeting a certain energy requirement. So there is an overall higher standard of building/renovation in both aspects of quality and design that people in Luxembourg are used to and expect without questioning.
As architects we have tried to provide high quality design to every client, even before our experience outside of Sofia. In fact, people who reach out to an architect for their interior project in Bulgaria would also expect the same level of professionalism and design achievements.
Also, we work abroad with Bulgarian manufacturers, who surpass their foreign colleagues with their willingness to work outside of the box and their motivation to say yes to working on custom designs that would be considered too different from the average on a local level.
What is a top-class interior for you? How do you create one?
With every project as a base we try to achieve functionality and good design without any compromises in between, and to do so according to the needs and requirements of the client and the possibilities of the space. In any interior on a design level we also aim to incorporate unique design solutions and elements, quality materials, attention to every interior element and detail. So the most luxurious, high class interiors would also combine quality materials and acknowledged design pieces.
We believe in the contemporary, minimal approach to the design that uses a reasonable combination of colors, textures and materials in achieving clean, elegant and yet cozy atmospheres for its inhabitants. We also try to make room for manifesting the individuality of the client, not just in the overall process, but sometimes also in an interior element like the art pieces in the project and we have managed to enjoy good results together with our clients on projects in Bulgaria, Luxembourg and France.
What does top-class interior in 2021 and 2022 look like?
Reasonable, sustainable, tailor made with quality work and materials and a pinch of art – all are equally important.
