BEING SUCCESSFUL IN THE DIGITAL WORLD WITH ACADEMY NIKOLA TESLA

Co-founder Dr Valentina Ivanova, PhD, on quality education for children from the second digital generation

Dr Valentina Ivanova.jpg

Understanding children, the environment where they live, grow and will work, and the very essence of knowledge – Academy Nikola Tesla is an innovative initiative that transforms responsible attitude towards education into an effective tool for knowing the world. Working with children is based on the philosophy that in a world of unlimited information they have to be taught how to think independently. We talked to Dr  Valentina Ivanova, PhD, co-founder of Academy Nikola Tesla, to get a more profound understanding of the mission and ideas of this educational institution that helps personal growth.

Dr Ivanova, you have a rich experience as a teacher. What makes today's children different? What do they ask you?

The favourite question of today's children, like all children before them, is "Why?". However, today's children are growing in times of exceptional abundance of information and opportunities. The Internet is as old as their parents. The first iPhones are older than themselves. These children are the second digital generation. They are not just born with access to the entire human knowledge – they do not have any contact with the world in which information used to travel slowly, printed on paper, news were broadcast twice a day on a single TV channel and one had to memorise phone numbers. They, and often their parents, do not remember the time when knowledge was stored in books and people who had read them would add and develop it, when knowledge was handed down from generation to generation by the people who had read more than the others – teachers. The abundance of information devalues having your own knowledge in the eyes of children today. No teacher is capable of knowing everything that can be found in the global network by run-of-the-mill search algorithms or AI. This is why today the question "why" more often comes in the shape of "Why do I need this?", "Why should I learn this?", "Why do I have to know this…?". From a symbol of curiosity and inquisitiveness, "why" is becoming a symbol of passive-aggressive resistance of children against the educational system.

Is the Bulgarian educational system successfully modernising and meeting the requirements of the new digital generation?

The educational system is fixated on the curriculum and the educational materials, in other words, the experts in the Ministry of Education discuss what knowledge and skills all students have to master and in what order they should be introduced to them. Absorbed by 150 years of routine, they do not see that this conversation has become meaningless – children today can seek and learn whatever they want, when they want, if they want! They do not need school for this. This is why children do not understand why they need school. And school has forgotten that it exists not because of the material and the curriculum, but because of children – to help them grow, to become individuals and to confidently take the reins of their own lives.

How would you describe quality education in the era of ready answers and AI?

Quality education should guarantee a good quality of life. With this expectation parents invest time and money in their children's education. We fully believe that knowledge is the only certain road to success. It is how it is since the dawn of humanity. Some knowledge and skills are immune to the changes of time.

First, children should be good people. They should be capable of personal growth, to be emotionally intelligent and to understand that they are a part of society and as such have certain obligations. They should be capable of using humanity's experience and wisdom, to listen to their hearts and express their thoughts and feelings properly. They need all of these to make the world a better place.

Second, children should be capable of independent and logical thinking. They should know how to approach information critically, know causation from correlation, see hidden links and switch from the abstract to the concrete, and back.

Of course, third is the ability to efficiently use the tools of their time. Once, it was the plough. Today, it is computers and digital technologies.

How you, in Academy Nikola Tesla, can help children to develop these skills and acquire this knowledge?

We teach our students how to learn from the wisdom of previous generations, and how to express themselves efficiently with our Bulgarian Language and Literature courses.

We teach them to be reasonable, responsible and focused people capable of critical thinking and solving problems with our Mathematics courses.

We teach them to understand and master the tools of our time – digital technologies, in our Robo STE(A)M and Programming courses.

Becoming a holistic, aware individual takes a lot of time and deliberate practice. This is why our curriculum has courses for children ranging from preschoolers to 12th graders. Methodical work and development give the best results. However, we are also open to any child who wants to improve, regardless of their age.

The focus of the entire team of the Academy is on children and their growth. Regardless of when they come to us – in 1st, 5th, 7th, 10th or even 12th grade, at the end of the course they do not want to leave, because of their friends, and teachers, and the feeling that they belong here. Little ones show this with affection and older ones – with respect. With each passing year, the community around Academy Nikola Tesla grows bigger.
