KAZANLAK: TOWN WITH A UNIQUE FRAGRANCE

Mrs Galina Stoyanova, mayor, on the city's trademark blend of nature, tradition and history

Mayor Galina Stoyanova

The fragrant oil-bearing rose is a popular and much-loved symbol of Bulgaria, and Kazanlak is the place where it blooms most luxuriantly. For centuries, the town has been a centre of rose production, while its impressive historical and archaeological landmarks make it a favourite tourist destination.

As deputy chair of the Association of Mayors of European Cities with Essential Oil Production, what do you think makes Kazanlak truly unique?

Kazanlak is the heart of the Valley of Roses, a place where nature, tradition and history have lived in harmony for centuries. Thanks to the region's unique climate and soils, and the skills of generations of rose growers, our town is a global centre for the cultivation of Rosa damascena, and for the production of rose oil and essential oils.

Our rose oil is a symbol of quality, purity and authenticity. For us, it is not merely a livelihood, but part of our identity and culture. The production process, from the early morning picking to the distillation, is a ritual and a body of knowledge passed down through generations. It continues to evolve through modern technologies and sustainable practices.

Kazanlak is also home to some of the most impressive archaeological sites in Europe, the Valley of the Thracian Kings. This combination of ancient history, living culture and modern development makes us an attractive tourist centre.

In a world of increasing uniformity, how do you preserve the town's unique character?

As mayor and deputy chair of the Association of European producer cities, I see it as my duty to preserve and defend our traditions. Kazanlak initiated a large-scale campaign in Brussels against the revision of the CLP Regulation, which threatened to classify essential oils as hazardous chemical mixtures. I personally presented our arguments in the European Parliament and united colleagues from France, Italy and Greece in a common front. A new period of assessments and scientific evidence now lies ahead. Kazanlak will remain on the front line in this diplomatic battle, because our "liquid gold" is a pure gift of nature. We will not allow it to be compromised.

What would you recommend we do if we are planning a visit to Kazanlak for the Rose Festival, on 5-7 June?

The Rose Festival is an experience that brings together fragrance, colour, culture and tradition. Experience it with all your heart.

The rose picking is an unforgettable, almost magical experience: morning dew, the scent of freshly gathered blossoms, authentic customs. Afterwards, you can see how the blossoms are processed and how rose oil is extracted. The festival culminates in a colourful and inspiring parade in Kazanlak. The election of the Queen of Roses, the symbolic ruler of the Valley of Roses, showcases our town's beauty, youth and spirit.

Interest in the festival is extremely high, so plan your visit in advance.
