RIPPING WASHBASINS OFF
A recent idiom, whose roots lie in the construction boom in Bulgaria. Experts offer two theories about its origin: a mystical and a material one. Both relate to beautiful women and entail an erotic connotation
According to the first, a girl from Gorna Oryakhovitsa went to a construction site to see how things were going. The lass, whose name some linguists claim to know, was so pretty that the washbasins just attached to the bathroom walls came off onto the floor. “The washbasins got ripped off!” the workers said.
The second theory is material. A girl from Gorna Oryakhovitsa went to a construction site to see how things were coming along. The structure was not very big and the girl was wellendowed. Passing by a washbasin, she stumbled and ripped it off with her breasts. The workers exclaimed: “She rips washbasins off!”
In modern Bulgarian, if someone or something “rips washbasins off,” he/she/it is indeed riveting.
