When your pet needs grooming, prophylaxis, vaccinations and protection against parasites, Royal Vet offers royal treatment and excellent results. This is why we met with Dr Ivan Dodovski to talk about how to take the best care for our dogs in summer, a season that is both enjoyable for them, but also full of risks for their health.
What should we know about care for dogs in summer?
Summer requires more intensive care for dogs. It is recommendable to trim the hair on the paws so that it does not gather thorns. The same goes for hair around the ears and inside the ear canal. In summer, due to highest temperatures, they are more prone to ear infections.
After each walk the fur should be brushed and checked for thorns and crawling ticks. It is recommendable that long-haired dogs are groomed or that at least the undercoat is removed with a furminator. This will prevent the animal from overheating.
Washing with shampoo should be done only occasionally so that the skin and fur do not get dry. When used, paraben-free shampoos should be preferred.
Walk your dogs in the cool hours of the day and avoid walking on heated sidewalks, asphalt and sand.
If you transport your pet in your car first correct the temperature in the vehicle. Never leave your dog to wait for you inside – even with an open window. It is crucial to provide your pet with enough water, including during walks.
Prophylaxis against external parasites and dirofilaria is crucial in this season, as this is when these spread the most. If your pet loves swimming and cooling off under running water, opt for pills against fleas and ticks.
The team of Royal Vet wishes you a great vacation and many happy moments with your pets!
