In technology, talent does not simply emerge – it is shaped. It grows at the intersection of academic foundations, real-world experience and the guidance of professionals who understand where the industry is heading next. In a world where artificial intelligence, big data and machine learning are redefining entire business sectors, the question is no longer whether young professionals will need to adapt, but how well prepared they are to do so.

For the past four years, EPAM Bulgaria has been working closely with the Faculty of Mathematics and Informatics at Sofia University to support the development of the "Data Analysis" program. What began as a partnership has grown into a long-term collaboration bridging academia and industry, preparing students to join the tech workforce and shape its future.

We spoke with Vladimir Natchev, Country Head of EPAM Bulgaria, and Prof. Maya Stoyanova, Dean of the FMI about the milestones of this partnership, the qualities that define future-ready professionals and the vision for the years ahead.

Mr Natchev, looking back at the past four years, what key milestones have defined EPAM's partnership with the FMI?

Vladimir Natchev: Our collaboration with the FMI has reached several important milestones that have strengthened both the program and our partnership. One of the most significant achievements has been supporting four consecutive classes of students, ensuring continuity and long-term impact rather than a one-time initiative.

By expanding our internship and scholarship initiatives, we aim to provide students with structured, hands-on experience on real-world projects. In addition to these programs, EPAM has invested in the faculty's infrastructure, including the donation of laptops, ensuring access to the latest technology and tools. Combined with mentorship from our industry leaders and exposure to modern methodologies, these efforts bridge academic learning with industry practice, supporting the next generation of data professionals to excel in a rapidly evolving tech landscape.

What should young talents focus on today to build sustainable and impactful careers in the tech industry in the future?

VN: To build a sustainable and meaningful career in technology, young talents should focus on developing adaptability. The ability to continuously learn, reskill, and stay curious ensures long-term relevance. This goes beyond mastering technical skills – it includes critical thinking, curiosity and confidence to ask the right questions.

Equally important is gaining practical experience early. A strong theoretical foundation is essential, but real growth happens when knowledge is applied to solve problems. Internships, mentorship and hands-on projects help young professionals build confidence, understand business context and navigate real-world constraints.

Finally, sustainable careers are built by professionals who collaborate effectively and take initiative. Together with the FMI team, we aim to cultivate these qualities in the students of the program.

Prof. Maya Stoyanova, Dean of the Faculty of Mathematics and Informatics of Sofia University

If industry defines the pace of innovation, academia builds the foundation that sustains it. From the university's perspective, the partnership with EPAM has been more than support – it has been a catalyst for growth. Prof. Maya Stoyanova, Dean of the Faculty of Mathematics and Informatics, reflects on how the "Data Analysis" program has developed and what lies ahead.

Prof. Stoyanova, how do you think the "Data Analysis" program has developed over the past four years, and what role has the partnership with EPAM played in this process?

Prof. Maya Stoyanova: The partnership with EPAM has played a key role in the development of the program by bringing valuable industry insight. Through scholarship and internship opportunities, guest lectures, mentoring and work on real or near-real projects, students gain hands-on experience and a clear understanding of how technology companies operate. I believe this collaboration helps ensure that the bachelor's program remains relevant and competitive both nationally and internationally.

What practical skills and professional attitudes do students develop through their hands-on experiences with EPAM?

Students gain experience collaborating in multidisciplinary teams and presenting technical results clearly to diverse audiences. They learn to navigate real-world constraints, including time, resources and client requirements, while developing critical professional mindsets such as proactivity and the ability to adapt continuously in a rapidly evolving technological landscape.

How do you see the development of the "Data Analysis" program over the next four years in the context of the partnership with EPAM. What is key to its further advancement?

I expect the program to further strengthen the connection between solid mathematical foundations and the practical application of data analysis and AI. We also plan to expand project-based learning, work with real data and increase the involvement of industry experts in the educational process. The partnership with EPAM can expand through the joint development of new courses and applied research projects, strengthening students' transition into the professional world and boosting their confidence as young specialists.

As the technology landscape continues to evolve at unprecedented speed, partnerships between academia and industry are becoming not just valuable, but essential. The collaboration between EPAM and the FMI demonstrates how sustained commitment and shared vision can create a powerful ecosystem for nurturing future talent. Initiatives like this show that when education and industry move forward together, they do more than prepare students for the future – they help define it.
