Stepping onto the rocky promontory that juts out 230 feet into the sea north of Balchik, you will see the last yet-untainted-byconstruction bits of the Bulgarian Black Sea coast.

The view, however, has not always evoked pleasant feelings. There is a legend that 40 Bulgarian girls jumped into the sea to avoid Islamisation by the Ottoman Turks. Or, alternatively, you may choose to believe the myth that the rocky promontory miraculously appeared under the feet of St Nicholas, who was being chased by the same Ottomans. Today, a chapel stands on the site, and the promontory itself is a major tourist attraction.

Interestingly, some of the Ottomans, who invaded as early as the 14th Century, stayed – and adopted Christianity. Members of the so-called Gagauz community, a rare example of Christian Turks, still live in the villages nearby.
