As you stroll amidst the holes and furrows carved thousands of years ago into this rocky plateau about 30 km, or 19 miles, from Asenovgrad, watch your step
The sheer precipice can cause vertigo and rumour has it that the clairvoyant Vanga predicted that the sanctuary would reveal its secrets only after it had claimed 10 human victims. So far the list of fatalities is only three – don't be the fourth!
The view of the surrounding Rhodope peaks and the fresh air make it well worth the walk, however. If you give your imagination free reign, you can pick out a map of the night sky amidst the craters and find human faces peering out of nearby cliffs.
And if you happen to believe in UFOs, be sure to glance overhead. Some swear that strange flying objects – apparently not manmade – often streak across the sky above the rock. Others argue that the energy fields above the cliffs are stronger than those in the Himalayas.
