WHERE IN BULGARIA ARE YOU?
One of the most mysterious places in Bulgaria is in the Strandzha.
Because of its proximity to Turkey, this major archaeological site has been closed off to the public for decades and has only recently begun to attract a trickle of visitors. It sits deep in the forest, and was probably an elaborate tomb complex dating back to Thracian or Roman times.
In later years parts of it were lifted by locals and used for the construction of houses as well as in Christian churches, a fine example of the amalgamation of religions typical for this part of the country.
