FAILED ASSASINATION

The man who pulled a gun on Ahmed Dogan, the leader of the Movement for Rights and Freedoms, has all the characteristics of a Bulgarian national hero.

1. A brilliant plan.

2. Bad execution.

3. He was nearly killed by Turks.

BULGARIAN BUSINESS

A major airlines advertises the position of chief pilot. The first applicant is a German. The chairman of the board asks him what experience he has.

"I have over 10 years flying a Jumbo with Lufthansa, then I flew American Airlines for five years, I've tried all the modern aircraft and have worked under extremely strenuous conditions," the German says.

"And what kind of salary would you expect?"

"3,000 euros per month.

"Why do you think we should be giving you this kind of salary?"

"Because I have significant experience, because I speak a number of languages, and because I will be able to deliver a top-quality service," the German says.

The second applicant is a Frenchman.

"What experience do you have," the chairman of the board asks.

"I have over 10 years of experience with Air France, I have worked for major companies in Africa, and I have made some great professional accomplishment," the Frenchman replies.

"And what kind of salary would you expect?"

"6,000 euros per month."

"Why do you think we should be giving you this kind of money?"

"Because I have a lot of experience, because I speak French, and because I will deliver top-quality service under strenuous conditions," the Frenchman replies.

The third applicant is a Bulgarian.

"What experience do you have?", the chairman of the board asks.

"Experience? What experience?", the Bulgarian seems genuinely surprised.

"What kind of flying experience do you have?"

"Oh, none. In fact I rarely go on airplanes because I am actually scared of heights."

"This is an interview for the appointment of the chief pilot of a major airline, you realise that don't you," the chairman of the board gets impatient.

"Of course I know. That's why I am here," the Bulgarian answers.

"OK, what kind of salary would you expect?"

"9,000 euros per month."

"And why do you think we should be giving you this kind of money?"

"Don't you realise?", the Bulgarian says. "Three thousand for you, three thousand for me, and we will give three thousand to the German to fly the plane."

IRON BARS, NO IRON BARS
Lovers of freedom were quick to cry fowl. Is this what the supposedly liberal, pro-Western Changes Continued government is doing? Protecting itself from the love of the general public with iron bars?

WHAT'S IN A NAME?
A recent example is the Sofia City Council's decision to rename one of the streets around where the Russian Embassy is situated to The Heroes of Ukraine, and a nearby small square to Boris Nemtsov.

Boyko Borisov under arrest
WE CATCH THEM, THEY LET THEM GO FREE
As soon as the news of the Thursday evening arrests broke out a significant chunk of the Bulgarian population went into a frenzied jubilation comparable, according to one observer, to that goal at the 1994 World Championship Bulgaria scored against Germany.

The video, shot in the National Assembly, shows an young MP for the ruling Changes Continued political party who takes up the rostrum to make a statement to the house and then... forgets what he was about to do.

BALLOT EATING AS LAST RESORT
Ahead of the 14 November general election some parties – notably the DB, or Democratic Bulgaria, and the ITN, or There Is Such a People party – insisted on taking away the good old-fashioned paper election ballots that you had to use a pen to put a cross ag

In the neighbourhood, I asked a retired woman, who habitually makes a public nuisance by throwing bread crumbs out of her fourth-floor balcony to feed Sofia's uncontrolled population of pigeons, to stop doing that because a uncontrolled population of pigeon

A sober look at the current mess of Bulgarian politics in the aftermath of 12 years of Boyko Borisov may produce some unexpected if slightly idiosyncratic explanations.

DID BOYKO DRIVE AN ILLEGAL JEEP?
Dignitaries, ministers and even foreign guests were "invited" into the jeep while the Bulgarian prime minster went for a government-provided ride.

FACT-CHECKING BOYKO BORISOV
Usually made in his inimitable style, a combination of uncouth nativism and broadspeak, they can easily fill up books. Here is a selection of Borisov's most recent public statements, rendered verbatim:

MAKING THE ROUNDS IN BULGARIA
At the beginning of an exam a student turns to the professor: "Let's now see what you have taught me online." * "Do you remember when we were optimistic and made grandiose plans?"

COFFEE AND CROISSANTS, PLEASE
It probably is, but the genius computerists hide themselves very well, and certainly do not work for Boyko Borisov's government.
