JOLLY KIDS – OR HOW ENGLISH BECOMES THE LANGUAGE OF PLAY

The boutique educational centre Jolly Kids is a magical place where young children acquire English effortlessly by immersing themselves in a language-rich environment

Founders Presiana Shisheva and Svetoslava Koynova share more.

How does Jolly Kids succeed in supporting young children's natural ability to acquire languages through effective learning?

Presiana: Our bespoke programme is designed specifically for the youngest learners, aged 1 to 7, and simulates a natural language environment. The children do not "study" the language – they absorb it through a variety of everyday activities, from handwashing routines to arts and crafts, storytelling, songs and even scientific experiments.

Svetoslava: At this golden age, children acquire language with incredible ease. The most important element in any foreign language programme is creating a positive and supportive atmosphere, with age-appropriate stimuli. When children feel calm and cared for, and the educational activities are engaging, they pick up the language naturally.

What does the immersion principle you use look like in practice?

Presiana: From the moment the children arrive until the moment they leave our space, they are fully immersed in an English-speaking environment – just as they would be if attending nursery in the UK. Our programme follows a consistent daily rhythm. For example, when free playtime ends, the teacher sings a song signalling that it is time to tidy up. This signals to the children that storytime is next. These small transitions provide a sense of security and predictability, allowing even children who have only recently joined us to quickly grasp what comes next.

Svetoslava: The immersion method is particularly effective because it works equally well for children with little or no prior English, as well as for those who are more advanced. Beginners develop their listening skills and start recognising key words, while the more advanced children absorb the language more holistically – picking up on full phrases and fixed expressions, much like native speakers.

Children love coming to Jolly Kids because…

Svetoslava: As one of our parents once said: because we turn English into the language of play. And that is not just a joke. Every educational situation is followed by free play, which helps children immediately activate and apply their new knowledge. For example, if we have just had a session about animals, during free play the children continue the narrative using soft toys or engage in imaginative role play – all in English. Parents often tell us their children continue "playing in English" at home.

Presiana: At this age, the most important thing is to inspire children and turn language into play. From there, everything else comes naturally.
