LE SALLAY INTERNATIONAL ACADEMY: MAKING THE BEST OF DISTANCE LEARNING SCHOOLING AND BOARDING SCHOOLS, WITHOUT THEIR SETBACKS

LE SALLAY INTERNATIONAL ACADEMY: MAKING THE BEST OF DISTANCE LEARNING SCHOOLING AND BOARDING SCHOOLS, WITHOUT THEIR SETBACKS

Providing your children with the best education available becomes an extra-hard task when you are an expat. Especially if you change place every year or so.

Local international schools are not always what they claim to be, and your children suffer from the change of their environment and friends. Sending your kids to a prestigious boarding school abroad is also unattractive: in that sweet age before adolescence hits you would rather have your children around you, in the family. Home schooling, however, will definitely deprive them of contacts with their peers; as a consequence, their skills to bond, co-operate and lead will suffer.

Le Sallay International Academy is an innovative idea to solve that problem. The school for children aged 10-14 combines distance learning for 6-8 weeks at home with study camps for 3-4 weeks in France.

This allows family members to keep their close contact and the kids to have the precious opportunity to study and play with their peers, to socialize and to meet friends from around the world.

Every stage of the educational process at Le Sallay International Academy is crafted to satisfy the children's educational and social needs.

Unleashing potential of distance learning

The curriculum of Le Sallay International Academy doesn't follow the educational requirements of any particular country. It, however, is designed to provide the best relevant education and to take into consideration the child's talents and preferences. Besides the core classes of humanities and mathematics and science, there are additional classes on foreign languages and local literature and history. The groups are small and led by experienced professionals.

Yan Rauch, Head of Science and Math Department at the Academy, explains in detail how the school will provide quality education: "First, we're creating a meaningful curriculum. Here in Le Sallay we don’t have to follow any national curriculum, but certainly we develop our math and science programs based around commonly accepted standards, such as Common Core. And we have to exceed those standards just to satisfy them all, because we want our graduates to excel at any national exam. We include some extra content as well, such as graph theory, which is not generally taught at middle school level, but it's fun and useful. But the key point here is connecting content with meanings. It's really important to encourage kids to connect their own experiences and interests to the program content. The more personal experience and prior knowledge the learner brings to the lesson, the more meaningful it becomes. And that brings us to the second point: student centered learning."

Matthew McConnellIntegrated approach is applied in the Academy's humanities program, too. "The humanities program at Le Sallay is interdisciplinary and thematically driven," explains Dr. Matthew McConnell, Head of Humanities Department. "Humanities instructors will work closely with each other to reinforce the knowledge and skills being taught in each other's classes. Research shows that students process and retain information better when it is supplied within a broader context. So, for instance, they will make better use of instruction on how to write a paragraph if they immediately put that rhetorical knowledge to use in a practical way by writing a short essay for their history class, and they will better retain an art history lecture if they are learning about the same period and place in English and geography. We will also plan themes for each year that help to unify the various courses taught in the humanities, synchronizing instruction and allowing students to 'locate' their learning within a broader field of knowledge. Themes are a fun way for us to ensure that le Sallay functions as a learning community, one that improves the learning of all students by inviting them to explore a variety of interconnected topics."

Study camp experience

The other core part of the Le Sallay International Academy approach are the weeks that students spend away from their families, in a 16th century French chateau refurbished as a 4-star hotel.

The environment is protective, eliminating the bullying that so typical for boarding schools. Activities cover both classes and plenty of fun, games and meeting new friends. Regular lectures by world-renown scientists, journalists and other prominent figures are also a feature, expanding the children's horizons.

Special care for special children

Inclusivity is a major thing for the Le Sallay International Academy. A team of specialists at the school pays special attention to twice-exceptional (2E) children, enabling them to learn and socialize effectively both during home schooling and study camps.

Le Sallay International Academy"I do see a lot of potential in Le Sallay’s approach. It will provide additional flexibility for parents and students," says Svetlana Ochotnikova, family and child psychologist, behavioral consultant and special educational needs teacher at the Academy. "It could resolve many individual issues that conservative educational systems struggle to cope with. I’m thinking of sensitive children, shy children, children with special educational needs, children and families who travel and are mobile geographically. I see my role as a mentor and friend for students and parents rather than as an educationalist who insists on my own view of 'what's best.' I believe that close cooperation and open dialogues can create the warm and supportive atmosphere where trust grows. I will use my whole panoply of professional methods and techniques (which I regularly update) to help overcome any possible difficulties. Children who need special support will be assessed personally. Many different options can be offered. That could mean a regular camp-Skype schedule, or specific recommendations for parents, or a different learning schedule (shorter working hours, different motivational methods, sensory integration etc.)."
