For 18 years now, Maria Magdalena Private Kindergarten has created a nurturing and encouraging environment where young children explore the world, communicate, play and create. Headmistress Rosalia Nikolova shares more about the philosophy behind this remarkable kindergarten.

How do you manage to win the trust of parents?

Meeting the parents is the first step in choosing the right place for their child. Each parent comes to us with different motivations and questions. I approach everyone in the same way – I share the whole truth about the care we provide, our attitude towards the children, the team, the food, the conditions, and everything else. I believe that is exactly what helps me earn their trust.

And how do you win the children's affection?

Interacting with the children and caring for them is the most rewarding and most important part of my work. Here, too, sincerity is key – kids sense who truly cares for them and who is being honest. I aim to talk to them as equals, with respect and understanding, and I always listen to them patiently. I often joke with them – especially when they have done some mischief or are upset about something.

Fairness is instrumental to earning their trust. Children are very sensitive to unjust accusations. But, as I like to say, I treat them with "just strictness." Yes, I can be strict at times. I insist on rules, because they are essential – above all, for the children's safety. For example, they can enter my office freely. Sometimes they sit with me, and I explain what I am working on at the moment.

Crucially, I don't have favourites! I expect the same from my team.

My approach to each child is tailored to their individuality, personality, and behaviour. To do this, I rely on my own observations, my colleagues' impressions and conversations with parents.

What is the most important thing that children receive at Maria Magdalena?

Love, understanding, support, care, comfort and warmth, plus plenty of knowledge and skills.

We aim to develop their emotional intelligence – to teach them to accept others as they are, and to show empathy and understanding. We also help them become independent, to learn how to think for themselves, assess situations, make decisions, and take responsibility for their actions. We work hard to build their social and communication skills as well.

The feedback from parents over the years shows that we are succeeding. Of course, each new year brings new experience and knowledge for us – an inspiration for growth and improvement.
