Online payment is so ubiquitous nowadays that we hardly notice it
The field is rapidly developing, so a growing number of established businesses or startups decide to try it or aim to update their old online payment options. Lilyana Vassileva, Development Manager at Nuvei, shares more.
What was your journey to the position of Software Development Manager at Nuvei?
It all began in school when I had to write my first few lines of code. At that moment I found a whole new world of opportunities that I needed to discover and explore. Back then everything looked like magic to me, and I was eager to understand how it works. The more I learned the more curious I got, which pretty much determined the course of my career. Exactly this curiosity combined with my affinity for solving challenging cases helped me to work my way up from a trainee to a Software Development Manager.
The spread of Covid-19 has changed many aspects of our lives. What is the impact of the pandemic over the online payments?
There has already been a trend of transition towards remote and contactless payments, even before the pandemic. The enforced social distancing accelerated that trend. Convenient online payments nowadays are no longer luxury but a necessity. This new consumer behavior requires a quick response from businesses, and many of them need to change their strategies drastically. In other words, everyone now is paying online, and if the companies do not change – they are risking finding themselves behind the times. We, at Nuvei, can offer them payment solutions that will help them adjust to the new reality quickly and effectively.
Nuvei acquired SafeCharge in August 2019. How has this deal affected the company?
It was undoubtedly an exciting time for us all. The acquisition transformed Nuvei into a truly global company with locations around the world. Today, we have been integrated with more than 450 payment methods worldwide, and our products portfolio is more comprehensive than ever.
Additionally, after the acquisition, we went public on the Toronto Stock Exchange (TSX). What became the biggest tech IPO (Initial Public Offering) in the history of TSX guarantees more capital which we can invest in research and development, and that will bring additional value, support and opportunities to grow for all our partners and customers.
What are the challenges for you and your team at present?
Adopting new technology is not an easy task and when it comes to adopting new concepts or architectures it becomes even harder. Latest trends in the IT Industry, like microservices, event sourcing and containerization, have shaped the technical aspects of the products developed at Nuvei in the last few years. It is quite challenging but is also an absolute necessity to keep up with the new technologies in this rapidly changing industry in order to meet client's everyday growing demands.
The Covid-19 situation does not only affect the payments industry, but also changed entirely the way my team and I used to work. Team members dealt with the long period of working from home in different ways and now, more than ever, I realize the importance of being close to them and having regular one-on-one meetings.
My personal challenge is related to building an environment that will allow me and my colleagues to be more productive and efficient. Optimized and well-defined processes, along with transparency and open communication, are my preferred tools for achieving it.
What products are you working on right now?
My focus is Cashier – our payment solution that can be integrated into any website e.g. e-commerce, gaming or gambling. It is a ready-made product, but it can be tailored according to customer needs, offering them an opportunity to select any of the Nuvei payment options or add industry specific features. We put in a lot of efforts in building a secure and compatible payment experience, a great example of which is the optimized payment processing with the new version of 3D secure authentication. Cashier was recently shortlisted for the SBC Payment Solution of the Year, which makes us incredibly proud.
Another product I am working on is an alternative to the hosted payment page that provides a direct API integration to our new clients, and on adding the last touches on the Playtech gaming platform for iGaming providers.
Last but not least, what does working for Nuvei mean to you?
I have been part of the company for a long time, and I can honestly say it feels like home now. I started as a developer, then I was promoted to a team leader, and now I am in charge of the development of some of Nuvei's most important customer facing products. IT is known to be a male-dominated field, but Nuvei has always been supportive of the female tech staff. In the role of a Hiring Manager I am looking for talented, skilled developers with great potential, regardless of their gender.
Here at Nuvei, we believe that people are the main asset and taking care of our employees has always been our priority. I am proud to continue the tradition of investing in further education of our development team and supporting the team members.
