The dialogue with the environment and the user is key for an interior, believes architect Emilia Maneva, founder and manager of SOFT CASE Studio
Recognisable, provocative and yet attractively comfortable: the interiors created by SOFT CASE Architecture, Interior Design & Brand Identity Studio always impress. We talk to architect Emilia Maneva, the studio's founder and manager, about the philosophy and principles of SOFT CASE.
Minimalism is the dominant style in your projects. Why are you attracted to it?
We, at SOFT CASE Studio, have fun in exploring the endless opportunities for space transformation. Yes, we aim at minimalism, but not so much in the word's stylistic meaning, rather than in following its main principles: the idea to reduce design to its main qualities and function, to free it of useless decoration and ornamentation. The essence of light, shape, materials and human psychology. I think that it is still early to label our work, as artists express themselves and evolve their style with time.
Which principles are core for you?
There are two core principles that we follow when we create our concept for a space, be it an exterior or an interior one: function and human experience.
The right understanding of the function and the analysis of the factors and prerequisites of a certain space – light, location, scale etc, make the foundation on which we develop the layout and the lightning idea. Attention should be paid not only to the space's physical characteristics, we have to start a dialogue with its environment and the people who will use it.
How do you "make peace" between design and the client's ideas and requirements?
This is the moment when we build the concept for a unique human experience. We analyse the particular user – a family with its everyday life and habits, a company with a developed structure and visual identity, or a restaurant or bar that aims to be memorable and instagramable, to make the best choice of materials, colours and details. This is how we create a space tailored for you.
