Siyka Logofetova, owner, on the mission to create a thinking, literate and successful new generation
When we talked to Siyka Logofetova, owner and founder of St Kliment of Ohrid Primary School, she repeatedly said how important it was for Bulgarian children to be able to think, to be literate and to have developed work habits. When we saw the results of the school's alumni, we understood why she was a stickler for these skills. The graduates from St Kliment of Ohrid Primary School successfully apply and continue their education in Bulgaria's best schools and, later in life, in prestigious international universities.
The curriculum of St Kliment of Ohrid Primary School is focused on extended study of Bulgarian and English, and mathematics. Since its foundation in 1999, the school has confidently achieved its goals to offer high-quality modern education and to develop children's communication skills and individual talents.
For what children is St Kliment of Ohrid Primary School?
We do some selection during the application, but my understanding is that Bulgarian children are clever enough and a serious filtering process is hardly needed for them to enter our school. Modern kids are born with digital skills, their generation is so different from the one of the children that studied at our school 20 years ago. This is why we aim to enlist healthy children who want to study and think. We aim to provide them with conditions that will build in them the basis for serious thinking.
How do you achieve this goal?
With teaching a lot of mathematics and Bulgarian language. For me, only a child who is literate in their mother tongue is able to have a wide horizon later in life. Stepping on good mathematical knowledge and mastership of the Bulgarian language, children can develop a serious attitude towards life. And this can happen only with the building of work habits. I have always believed that they define the future of a country and the prosperity of a nation.
For several years now we have partnered with MENSA Bulgaria, the organisation that offers the only reliable IQ test in the country. We created the so-called Class in Thinking where we stimulate children to think about the major problems of our world, such as global climate change and how we can stop it.
We also aim to build in children the desire to to read and, more specifically, to read with understanding, because books are in the foundation of the thinking process.
Teachers at St Kliment of Ohrid Primary School have full support from the management. We are aware that a proper salary is not enough for boosting teachers' authority; they also need to feel supported.
Another key factor are our young mathematics teachers who teach children love for this great discipline which lies in the foundation of science and modern digital technologies. The results are visible in the high achievements of our alumni after they graduate St Kliment of Ohrid Primary School.
