WHERE IN BULGARIA ARE YOU?
Depending on who you talk with, the monument to King Samuil, the medieval Bulgarian ruler who lost a major battle against the Byzantines as a result of which every soldier in the Bulgarian army had his eyes gauged out, is either a splendid display of Bulgaria's historical greatness or a piece of kitschy crap fit for a theme park rather than a public square.
Bulgaria's top brass, including the president, went to its inauguration and the church even "consecrated" it. For several weeks passers-by would come and stare at the monument to make sure the king's eyes were indeed shining. The sculpture was quick to enter unofficial top-10 lists of "unusual" monuments worldwide.
