The crusades ended in what is now Bulgaria on 10 November 1444.

Following a year of bitter battles throughout the Danubian plane, the forces of the king of Poland and Hungary, Władysław III, encountered the Ottoman Sultan Murad II for the final showdown, near the Black Sea coast.

Władysław went straight into battle. He aimed at the sultan, but was killed instantly. The Christian army retreated. The Ottomans cemented their power in the Balkans and started eyeing the West. For the next two centuries they became a formidable power, one that every state in Europe feared.

The body of the dead Władysław disappeared from the battlefield. He now has two tombs – the official one in the Wawel Cathedral in Krakow, the burial site of Polish kings, and the other where he was slain – on the outskirts of a major town, in a beautiful park. It is one of the few mementos of the West European Middle Ages in Bulgaria.

Built on a hill almost 180 degrees surrounded by a river meander its outlook constantly changes with the weather and the seasons. Bulgarian kids are bussed there on obligatory school tours.

Most of these water reservoirs exist to this day, though some are reportedly in a bad state as they have not been maintained for years. The majority are unremarkable, but some are in fact quite serene – and many locals frequent for angling or camping.

As a result of what some Bulgarians refer to as the "unbridled" construction of hotels, resorts and holiday homes – "entombing the Black Sea in concrete" – many of them have been destroyed.

It was supposed to commemorate a series of 19th century battles between Russian and Ottoman forces that led to the restoration of Bulgaria's independence. As such, every Bulgarian school kid knows it as they are taken on obligatory bus tours of the area.
