WHERE IN BULGARIA ARE YOU?
Next to the small church, where a 19th Century massacre of Bulgarians took place, sits an actual Soviet fighter plane donated to their hometown by local soldiers born in 1949.
The massacre, propagated to the Western world by an Irish-American journalist, Januarius MacGahan, helped focus public and political attitudes on the "Eastern Question." Currently, it is one of the very strong taboos in Bulgaria's history, and even trying to discuss it will probably not be tolerated. Situated in the Rhodope, the modern town, and especially the nearby lake, are becoming popular as a summer holiday destination with plenty of opportunities for fishing and swimming.
