WHERE IN BULGARIA ARE YOU?
A former volcano at the very edge of southwestern Bulgaria, it is dotted with hot mineral springs that make an eerie sight especially with all the steam coming out when it's cold.
It is better known, however, for the blind clairvoyant who used to live here and who made startling predictions about things as varied as the number of Bulgarian Second World War returnees, the collapse of the Soviet Union and the 1994 World Football Championship. Incredibly, many listened to her, and at one point the old woman-cum-seer was semi-officially employed by the Communist government as an adviser. Her house still stands there, at the edge of the 78° Centigrade pools and near the controversial Orthodox church, possibly the only one in the world beatifying someone unrelated to Christ. The old woman is thought to be the prototype for the Melnik Witch in Robert Littell's The October Circle.
