WHERE IN BULGARIA ARE YOU?
Simply put, Bulgaria's only rock art site is stunning. It rivals much better known sites in Western Europe, the Americas and Africa
Dating back to the late Chalcolithic, or about 5,000 BC, the seemingly crude yet mesmerising depictions of people and animals exude vivacity and energy. The most famous scene includes recognisable human activities like hunting, but its upper part tickles the imagination. Why have these women raised their arms? Do they dance? Do they pray? If yes, to whom? The men with erect penises among them suggest that the scene might represent a fertility rite. Or perhaps not? The mysteries and the unanswered questions have spawned a variety of alternative hypotheses including a relationship with ancient Sumer, Noah's Arch, Buddhism, Christianity, Tantrism and so on.
