WHERE IN BULGARIA ARE YOU?
Nestled in the Central Balkan Mountain, this small town had its heyday in the 19th century Revival Period when it was an important trading and educational centre.
Now a backwater not dissimilar to Tryavna, it is somewhat off-the-beaten-track and a bit moire difficult to reach than its more famous peer just 35 miles away. However, it holds a number of pleasant surprises including a couple of magnificent churches, a fossils museum, the notorious locally cured meat and... a huge head representing Januarius MacGahan, the US journalist who made a name for himself by reporting on the atrocities committed in the sunset days of the Ottoman Empire.
