GRANDEUR DISINTEGRATES

The new party, centred around a Disneyland-style theme park with strong "patriotic" connotations and located in northeastern Bulgaria, was represented by two men. Lieutenant-Colonel Nikolay Markov (who introduces himself as "colonel"), who became the leader of the 13-strong parliamentary faction of Grandeur, and Ivelin Mihaylov, the owner of the theme park, whom his ilk presented as Grandeur's "ideologue."

WOULD YOU BUY AN USED CAR FROM ANY OF THESE PEOPLE?

In an election campaign almost entirely dominated by finger-pointing and mudslinging the "genius" PRs of the CC-DB-DSB, or Changes Continued-Democratic Bulgaria-Democrats for a Strong Bulgaria, seem to have gained the top ignominy for the worst election message. In an ill-thoughtover replay of the 1960 ad for JFK targeted at Richard Nixon – anyone remember the Would-You-Buy-an-Used-Car-From-This-Man publicity stunt?

QUOTE-UNQUOTE

I do not comment on the panic attacks of any political leader. This issue should be addressed by a doctor.

President Rumen Radev on the leader of the DPS Delyan Peevski's assertion that the he wanted to yield Bulgaria to Putin

QUOTE-UNQUOTE

I have difficulties to establish whether this is a provocation or wet dreams.

Radan Kanev, an EMP candidate for the CC-DB, on the allegation that Boyko Borisov wants to become president while Delyan Peevski is prime minister

In fact Hristo Ivanov wanted to be president, he wanted me to be prime minister, and Borisov would be a retiree.

Delyan Peevski, co-leader of the DPS, on Asen Vasilev's allegation Boyko Borisov wanted to retire as president while Peevski was prime minister

WHERE IN BULGARIA ARE YOU?

At least a dozen man-made lakes of various sizes attract many locals who come here for the serenity, the mountain air and for the angling and photography opportunities. In actual fact being by a lake, especially in summertime, in many ways outshines going to the seaside if only because there are no crowds and it gets cooler at night. Besides, the hiking and trekking options will keep you busy for days if not weeks.

NEED A CONSPIRACY THEORY?

Atanas Atanasov is a general. He was the head of the Bulgarian security service under Ivan Kostov, the Bulgarian prime minister in 1997-2001, who inimitably prompted just two reactions: love or hate. There are still people who swear by him because they think he was resolute in dismantling the Communist system, and other people who swear at him because they consider all evils to have befallen Bulgaria since 1989 to be directly or indirectly attributable to him.
