Children can become successful adults only if besides academic knowledge they have mastered the art of good manners as well

This is the belief of Nevena Basarova-Dicheva, founder and education leader at Kids Academy, the first school in Bulgaria that teaches good manners.

You pay special attention to teaching good manners. Why?

The honest smile, the emotion that is aware of itself, the good words, the adequate nonverbal communication, the personal style and the outstanding presence: good manners, politeness and emotional intelligence can take you in places where good education and money will not!

These skills are not taught at prestigious universities, but have to be nurtured during early childhood in the family, at school and in society.

At the foundation of good manners is respect to others' personal space and behaviours. The capability to understand how other people feel (empathy) is an important part of emotional intelligence. In early childhood, it is the basis of friendships, later it is key for forming relations within the family and the workplace.

The awareness and acceptance of the 5 basic emotions: joy, anger, fear, disgust and sadness help both children and adults to be more flexible, adaptable and resilient to the challenges of everyday life. This helps to control aggression in children and teenagers, and for better decision making and dealing with problems and anxiety in adults.

The skill to attentively listen to the person we are talking to, without hurrying to share our opinion (active listening) is also good manners.

How do you teach children good manners?

For almost 9 years now the method that I authored, Flexible Discipline, has given exceptional results. It steps on clearly formulated rules, setting limitations and focusing on children's personal motivation. We introduce all concepts to them games and role playing different situations "with" and "without" good manners. Thus, children see first handedly the benefits and advantages of proper manners.

Do you think that emotional intelligence in children is of help when they are at school?

Emotional intelligence is the sum of skills that we learn and master through our entire lives. They are crucial when we are under stress. Just like adults, children can experience stress and even burn out before challenging events, such as an important test. The awareness of and the management of the emotions are the children's life belt.

Both as a mother and an expert I firmly believe that introducing good manners and emotional intelligence classes at school, even just once a week, will help children to be calmer and more confident, to have better marks, and be more disciplined and motivated in class. It will reduce aggression between them.

Kids Academy has worked in this direction for years. Both our students and their parents are exceptionally happy and satisfied with the results.
