STUDIO FRAME DESIGN: THEORY AND PRACTICE OF QUALITY INTERIOR

Architect Borislav Georgiev graduated architecture of residential buildings from the University of Architecture, Civil Engineering and Geodesy, in 2014

In his 10+ years of working experience he has designed single family houses, residential compounds, hotels and other public buildings. Six years ago he expanded his activities in the field of interior design as well. In 2020, he established STUDIO FRAME DESIGN, a studio for architecture and design.

Is it necessary for a professional like you to seek "contact" and "mutual understanding" between exterior and interior in architecture, when working on a project?

Architecture creates spaces and volumes artistically shaped to affect the viewer and the user. Invariably, the process includes both a building's exteriors and interiors. People perceive first the outside shell, while the interior is the natural continuation of this perception.

We see this in many examples of modern global architecture. In house design, when the investor is going to be the inhabitant as well, one should pay serious attention to blending and symbiosis of exterior and interior. This can be achieved with creation of a common style and geometry, application of the same materials, colours and textures in some zones.

Is there enough durable materials that can be used both in the interior and exterior?

Recently, manufacturers have introduced a number of materials that are exceptionally resistant to both outdoor atmospheric conditions and the conditions in a kitchen, like hot pots and cutting with sharp knives. Such materials are the new generations of large scale porcelain stoneware, HPL surfaces, composite wood and many more.

How can you combine properly good functionality with good appearance and cosiness?

In architecture and design the question of whether function or appearance comes first is the equivalent of the question of the hen and the egg. The balance of the two depends on the type of the site. In residential interiors function and cosiness are the priority, while in public spaces the visual effect comes before the function, in most cases.

The Christmas season, which we associate with cosiness, is just around the corner. How can we have cosy interiors?

The feel of cosiness is a must for any finished residential interior - without it we will end up with a soulless space filled with furniture.

Cosiness can be achieved with the proper colour scheme, accents as curtains, soft furniture, LED background lighting, wallpapers, and - a crucial element - decoration. Well selected decoration is the final touch that underlines the ambiance - paintings, vases, lamp shades, plants, the Christmas tree, even the sock above the fireplace.

Which are the most common interior design mistakes and what can ruin a seemingly good project?

A common mistake is when the client likes a photo of a good design on the Internet and then applies it in reality without a proper analysis and detailed survey.

Other mistakes are mismatched colours, tones, and textures, furniture of the wrong size (too large sofas or too small dining tables), impractical functionality of the spaces, overdoing with elements, details and decoration. The list of possible mistakes is quite long. Our job, as architects and designers, is to optimise and help with this process in order to create a cosy, comfortable and practical home.

STUDIO FRAME DESIGN
