HRISTINA ANGELOVA: THE POWER OF ART THERAPY

The creative process is a therapeutic process – master it

Hristina Angelova, a doctor and psychotherapist under supervision at the Institute of Psychosomatics and Integrative Psychotherapy, has often witnessed the therapeutic effect of art in her work – its ability to help us deal with our emotions. As a result, she continues to use art therapy with inspiration in her work with both adults and children.

How and why can art therapy help us live more mindfully and happily?

Art therapy allows us to explore our feelings and emotions, analyse our experiences and understand ourselves better. It can help us deal with trauma or loss, or simply serve as an escape from the overwhelming and chaotic lives that many of us have. It is also beneficial for people struggling with mental health issues such as depression, dissociative identity disorder, schizophrenia and others.

Art truly heals. The creative process is natural and pleasurable. As children, we don't think about how our drawings look – we don't care what others might think, if they are realistic enough, or if the colours and composition are right. We just create because it is instinctive and we enjoy it. We keep drawing until someone tells us that our drawing isn't good or that it looks too childish.

You also use photography therapy. Why?

The main branches of art therapy are visual art therapy, music therapy, drama therapy and dance therapy. I mostly use drawing and recently I have started using photography.

Most people take and keep photographs without thinking about why. Taken together, these photos reveal the stories of a person's life; they are visual impressions of where they have been, both physically and emotionally, and can even give clues as to where they might go. In therapeutic sessions, these photographs can serve as symbolic constructs and metaphorical objects that quietly offer inner insight – something that words alone cannot achieve.

Even reactions to postcards, magazine photos, online images or pictures taken by others can be used as natural bridges to access, explore and communicate different feelings and memories.

Why did you choose to offer an integrative approach in your therapeutic sessions?

Integrative psychotherapy, unlike traditional, strictly defined psychotherapeutic methods, does not have a fixed set of techniques or approaches. Instead, it gives the therapist the flexibility to choose different strategies from different therapeutic schools based on the needs of the client. The core understanding is that each person is unique and what works for one person may not be effective for another.
