Siyanna Lilova, founder of Praven Intelekt

When Siyanna Lilova first walked into a law firm in the late 2010s as part of her internship while studying at Sofia University, the legal profession was still rooted in centuries-old practices. Little did the young aspiring lawyer know that she would become one of its leading innovators in Bulgaria. Today, she is one of the faces of the AI revolution in law.

Lilova is the driving force behind Praven Intelekt, an AI-powered platform that enables Bulgarian legal professionals to search and retrieve relevant information from over a million documents in a timeframe that would have been unthinkable just two years ago. Its potential was quickly recognised. Just a year after entering the Bulgarian market, the platform was acquired by Lexroom, an Italian company specialising in AI solutions for lawyers.

Siyanna Lilova discusses Praven Intelekt's achievements and challenges, the role of AI in the legal profession and what comes next.

What is Praven Intelekt?

Praven Intelekt is an AI assistant for lawyers and other legal professionals, supporting legal research, analysis and document drafting. We launched the platform in 2025 to free lawyers from much of their routine work and enable them to use AI safely and reliably.

Unlike general-purpose AI tools, Praven Intelekt is designed specifically for Bulgarian law. It draws on nearly 1.2 million legal documents from 18 official Bulgarian and European sources, including legislation, case law, EU law and acts issued by public authorities. Every answer includes specific quotations and links to official sources, allowing lawyers to verify the information easily.

Our clients range from sole practitioners and small law firms to large legal teams, banks and municipalities. The benefits are tangible: case law research and document drafting take minutes rather than hours. One firm, for example, produces 1,600 documents a month using the platform, saving 60-70% of the time required.

Which legal processes are easiest to automate without risk?

Law relies heavily on working with text and information, which gives AI enormous potential to make lawyers' work easier. Repetitive tasks with clear rules and verifiable results are the easiest to automate: searching and summarising case law, analysing large volumes of documents, extracting information and drafting documents from templates.

However, I would not say that any automation is entirely risk-free. We must distinguish between performing a task and taking responsibility for the result. AI can prepare research or draft a contract in minutes, but professional judgement and verification remain central to a lawyer's work.

What risks does AI pose to the legal profession, and how does Praven Intelekt address them?

The two main risks are the reliability of answers and the confidentiality of information.

General-purpose generative AI tools can produce convincing but incorrect answers, even inventing court rulings and legal provisions, a phenomenon known as "hallucination". Preventing this was a key objective when we developed Praven Intelekt. The platform relies exclusively on official legal sources, updated daily. Every answer includes specific quotations and links to the original documents, which lawyers can check immediately.

The other major risk is protecting confidential information. Lawyers handle sensitive client data and are bound by professional secrecy, which requires exceptionally high security standards and and makes general-purpose models unsuitable. We have implemented the highest security measures and continually improve them to maintain our clients' full trust.

How do you think AI will change the legal profession?

AI can already perform a substantial share of legal work, and we are seeing this transform law firms' business models. When a task that once took five hours can now be completed in minutes, it is natural to question whether hourly billing remains the most appropriate approach.

I expect more firms to adopt fixed fees and subscription services, charging clients for results rather than time spent. Technology will also enable firms to serve more clients in the same amount of time, improving efficiency.

The more profound change, however, will be in the nature of legal work itself. Many routine, time-consuming tasks will gradually be automated, freeing lawyers to focus on activities that add the most value: strategy, complex cases, client relationships and business development.

Which aspects of legal practice will remain beyond AI's reach?

AI is advancing so rapidly that it is difficult to predict what the technology will never be able to do. But automating a legal task is very different from taking on a lawyer's role and responsibilities.

Clients do not hire lawyers to pay for hours spent researching case law or formatting documents. They seek expertise, trust and strategic advice tailored to their particular case or business.

Complex cases often have no single right answer. They require critical thinking, an understanding of the business context, risk assessment and the ability to build client relationships. These high-value activities, together with professional and ethical responsibility, will, in my view, remain at the heart of legal practice.

Praven Intelekt is now part of the Italian company Lexroom's portfolio. How do you see the platform developing, and what lies ahead for you professionally?

Joining Lexroom is a major accelerator for us. In just over a year, we built a product that attracted more than 20,000 users and earned the trust of some of Bulgaria's largest law firms. We are now part of a European company with far greater technological and financial resources, enabling us to develop the platform faster, introduce new features and enter international markets.

As Lexroom's Head of Central and Eastern Europe, I am responsible for the company's expansion across the region. Our next target markets are Greece, Turkey and Poland.

This is my next challenge. I began my career as a technology lawyer, and now I have the opportunity to help shape how technology transforms the legal profession across Europe. I am delighted to be doing this from Bulgaria and to show that we can build products here that transform entire professions.
