HORA: ARCHITECTURE MEETS THE DITIGAL WORLD

Architect Andrey Hodkevich, founder, is searching for the buildings of the future

Architect Andrey Hodkevich HORA.jpg

Andrey Hodkevich is an architect, researcher and founder of HORA (www.studio-hora.com) and Project Ephemera (www.projectephemera.com). In his years of investigation of the interaction between technology and architecture he has brought up ideas and concepts with global recognition and awards. Ever since his graduation from the Polytechnic University of Milan, he has been searching for new possibilities and dimensions of architecture in the digital era.

He is a laureate in Europe's most prestigious architecture competition for architects under 40 - Europan. In addition, for 8 years he was part of one of the leading Eastern European architectural offices, Aedes Studio. Andrey was also part of the team behind the successful application of Leeuwarden for European Capital of Culture in 2018.

In 2018 Andrey founded HORA - an award winning practice and research tribune. HORA develops contemporary and innovative architecture and interior design. It is a collaborative that manages to unite a group of architects and designers in their aim to provide a more conscious and inspiring architecture.

Andrey is a TEDx Lecturer and university guest lecturer. As an architect he believes that the interaction between Information, Technology and Architecture can give new possibilities in the way we design and perceive space.

Can we say already that we know what architecture of the future will look like?

There are certain directions in which we can start discussing architecture as a product of the Information Revolution by observing how it reflected social changes in the 20th century as a result of the Industrial Revolution. This is a model in which we observe the formation of typologies of the buildings created during the relevant period, by considering the demographics, the social and economical relationships, the cultural evolution and the technological progress. Thus, by analysing modern society and its daily life we can see a dynamic and quickly expanding world in which every architectural product can be optimised and reimagined. The advance of AI, the development and optimisation of computer graphics, the growing Internet network, the aim to reduce the carbon footprint of the construction industry, along with trends like space sharing and reuse provide just a handful of directions that could become trends for the reimagining of the shape of the architecture that we create.

How does the digital world change architecture?

Digitisation is reshaping architecture in almost all of its aspects. From the way in which we create the projects to the buildings and interiors’ type and typology, to the way they are used. During the design process, digitisation provides opportunity for more effective, coordinated and precise work. What is more interesting to me, however, is how digitisation optimises the architectural and urban planning principles that we can survey in the models for development of future cities. The appearance of increasingly more realistic computer graphics could optimise the integration of virtual architecture as an alternative to physical one. This is not a general solution, but an option through which we can ask the question “Which building typologies will really have to be actually built and which - not?”. This question is crucial if you consider that the construction industry is among the most polluting ones today, and the growing global population will continue to expand, and so will its needs. If we approach the question from a different perspective, today professionals in a lot of digitised fields have the freedom and opportunity to extract themselves from the dense urban environment. This trend is already a fact and is a good opportunity to balance between the centralised cities and the periphery.

Where is the meeting point of architecture, as embodiment of the physical world, and the digital?

The two will always cross at the humans and their needs. As architects, our profession requires us to create spaces with defined function. It could be physical or digital, but the end customer of this activity will always be the human and the way they perceive and use them.
