Mario Egov, artistic manager, invites us on an incredible concert on 10 December in Sofia
Mystic, charming and unknown, the Strandzha mountain preserves rich and exciting folklore traditions. Generations of modern Bulgarians are now familiar with them thanks to Strandzha Professional Folklore Ensemble. Since 1965, the professionals from the ensemble have found, recorded and preserved songs, dances and rites from Southeastern Bulgaria, and have interpreted them in impressive shows that win the hearts and souls of Bulgarian and international audiences. On 10 December, Strandzha Ensemble will give us the rare opportunity to see in Sofia a show of dance, songs and music dedicated to the rich and diverse festivities and rites performed by the people of Strandzha in the course of a year.
To learn more, we talked to the artistic manager of Strandzha Folklore Ensemble, Mario Egov. He was just six years old when he discovered that Bulgarian folklore was his passion. He joined the ensemble in 1994, and in 2008 became its artistic manager.
Why do we need the Strandzha Ensemble today? What is your core mission?
The core mission of Strandzha Ensemble is discovering, researching, recording, preserving authentic Bulgarian folklore from Southeastern Bulgaria - music, songs, dances, rites and rituals, verbal heritage, poetry, costume, everyday life, means of living. Our main task is to not simply preserve all of these, but to select and process it, turn it into a stage repertoire fit for the taste of modern audiences, and spread it in Bulgaria and the world.
Our mission is crucial. We are living in a globalised, technological world. Our folklore is arguably the only thing that makes us, Bulgarians, unique in the world. This is why we should preserve and interpret it, and turn it into an attractive form of stage art.

What is the concept of your big show in Sofia, on 10 December?
The programme is dedicated to the traditional calendar of the Strandzha region - one of the richest and most specific in Bulgaria. It will include the entirety of the enemble's repertoire pieces - dances, orchestra pieces, solo and ensemble songs, acapella performances. Each of these will tell about a big or not that big feast or rite that people of the Strandzha would engage in at certain times of the year.
We will start with the winter period. In it, we have included a Christmas piece, built entirely on the basis of authentic songs and incantations by koledari, or groups of men who would go around the houses to sing, dance and wish good fortune to inhabitants, from Karabunar (today's Sredets). We will also have the obligatory dances of the survakari, groups of men who go around the village, visit the houses, dance and wish good fortune, but around New Year's.
The spring cycle includes some of the most specific Strandzha rites, such as Sirni Zagovezni, which is on the week before Lent. In the Strandzha, it is also called Palikosh, or Burn the Basket. We will present the rite as a big dance performance that shows its stages - how the basket is weaved, filled and put on fire, how the ash is spread away. After a short song number based on traditional Easter songs, we will perform an interpretation of the so-called filek dances. These were danced in secret, without any music instruments, during Lent. In the spring cycle we will also show a dance that presents the agricultural, farming and craft works typical for this period of the year.
We will present the summer season with an acapella performance of songs sung during wheat harvesting and with a stage orchestra performance recreating the specific fairs in the Strandzha organised by sacred springs.
The programme will conclude with the autumnal part of the calendar and its greatest feast - St Dimitar's Day. This is when the active agricultural and farming work concludes, hired hands are paid for the year, migrant workers return home, and villages organise special horo dances on which families get to know girls and boys of marriageable age. We will recreate all of these rites, connected to St Dimitar's Feast, in a single, complex dance performance.
In 2025 Strandzha Ensemble will celebrate its 60th anniversary. How do you plan to mark the occasion?
We are already preparing a special show that we will perform at the end of 2025. In it, we will include some old and very old pieces from the ensemble's repertoire, because we are proud of it and we value what the ensemble's performers, managers and artists before us have done.
We are also preparing an entirely new programme with folklore from outside our region, such as Gabrovo and Sevlievo in the Stara Planina region, the Dobrich region, and Erkech, a small but very specific folklore region.
Which part of Strandzha folklore makes your heart beat faster?
Everything that I hear and see - music, dance, everyday stories, immediately makes me think of how I could turn them into a piece of our repertoire, and how I can relay them to the audience. I believe that nothing in our traditional everyday life is small or insignificant. Everything should be preserved and interpreted.
