Anita Hinova is Chair of the Via Humanica Association, a certified coach and mediator with extensive experience in social and emotional learning and school mediation. She works towards building a culture of dialogue, respect and personal growth among children, teachers, parents and organisations.

Mrs Hinova, what is the biggest misconception we have about children?

We tend to believe that when something is wrong in their behaviour, the cause lies within the children, instead of asking ourselves what we have failed to give them. Schools provide knowledge, parents provide care, and yet something essential is still missing. We rarely teach children – and ourselves – how to recognise what we feel, how to express it and how to remain in conversation when things become difficult. We expect them to be able to do things that we ourselves are still learning.

How does this lack affect the way we live and work, and how can it be addressed?

When we do not work on it consciously, the lack does not disappear; it shifts its language. At the core of every human interaction are conversations – both the held and the avoided ones. They actually reveal our social and emotional skills, and inner order. The lack of these skills is reflected in our decisions and relationships, but most visibly in how we show up for our children, because that is where the consequences last the longest.

The process of overcoming this – in both children and adults – is deeply similar. When a person is heard, seen and accepted with care – by themselves and by others – a sense of safety returns and the inner world begins to settle quietly. Thus, we gradually learn to understand ourselves and to build the ability to connect with others. This process becomes an outward change – relationships and decisions grow more authentic and mature.

What is the first step and our role in this transformation?

The first step is the pause – not reacting immediately, but taking the time to understand what is happening within us and in the other person. That is where choice emerges. From there begins our responsibility to create the environment in which we want our children to grow, becoming a direction they naturally follow.

However, to achieve this, our personal choice has to become a sustainable environment for more children. Today, this is possible through programmes in schools that build a culture of dialogue, respect and peace. We are often the bridge between the people and organisations that choose to support this change and the schools that put it into practice.

Once you see what changes when a child is truly heard and seen… it is no longer a question of whether you will take part, but how.
