KMC EAD: NUCLEAR POWER IS BACK

Engineer Teodor Osikovski, Chairman of the Board of Directors, on the responsibility of working for the future

Predictions of the end of nuclear power were wrong. Today, the sector is experiencing a genuine revival, and the energy company KMC EAD is part of it. Engineer Teodor Osikovski, Chairman of KMC's Board of Directors, holds a degree in mechanical engineering from the Technical University of Sofia and is a doctoral student there. He has also specialised in international economic relations and customs policy at the University of National and World Economy. Through his investment group Euro Technoconsult, which includes Balkancar Inpak AD and Minstroy Maritsa East AD, he added KMC EAD to his portfolio in 2019.

How is the role of a Bulgarian engineering company changing as nuclear power returns to Europe's agenda?

The energy transition is a major driver of KMC's development. Nuclear power is firmly back on Europe's agenda because it is a low-carbon, stable and reliable source of electricity.

For KMC, this means new opportunities, but also greater responsibility. We are developing as a modern industrial company, investing in innovation, advanced technologies and people. We believe that combining technological progress with human expertise is key to sustainable success. In the energy sector, there is no time to wait – we must shape the future now. That is why our motto is "We think about the future today".

Which skills will be most important for young professionals in energy and high-tech industries?

Nuclear power was underestimated for many years, which reduced interest in the profession and led to a shortage of young specialists.

Today, that is changing. The industry needs engineers with strong fundamentals, a willingness to keep learning and the ability to work with new technologies. Digital skills, teamwork and foreign languages will also become increasingly important.

KMC is actively working to attract young people to nuclear energy. We take part in the Technical University of Sofia's Career Days, showing students that this is a profession with a future and genuine opportunities for development.

What is your long-term vision for KMC? Where do you see the company in ten years?

KMC's new administrative building at the Kozloduy Nuclear Power Plant site is the first stage of our investment programme. We have also established a training centre for engineering staff, which will host future training programmes and seminars.

The second stage involves building a production facility for stainless-steel equipment, expanding our manufacturing capabilities.

In ten years, I see KMC as a leading regional company with proven expertise in nuclear energy, engineering and the manufacture and repair of industrial equipment. Our ambition is to be a reliable partner in Bulgaria's and Europe's energy transition.
